Role & Responsibilities
As the sole dedicated UX/UI designer for the SmartShifts project, my role extended across the entire product development lifecycle, from initial research to final execution, as well as mentor junior designers and align with diverse stakeholders and work cultures. However, our commitment to delivering unparalleled value led us to conduct extensive research beyond direct competitors. Exploring scheduling practices across diverse industries, including restaurants, wellness centers, and gyms, we aimed to identify industry standards and potential gaps in existing solutions.

To deeply understand the operational challenges and intricacies of scheduling in the wellness industry, we conducted extensive field studies at multiple customer locations, including prominent businesses like Gene Juarez Salons & Spas. During these visits, I engaged directly with key personnel, such as receptionists, administrators, and store managers, to observe and document their current appointment booking and staff scheduling processes. This hands-on approach allowed us to gather critical insights into the day-to-day workflows, pain points, and user needs, which informed the development of the SmartShifts AI scheduler. While the goal remained to present AI recommendations to our users – managers and owners – and enable them to seamlessly apply these suggestions, I proposed a distinctive approach. Introducing an unconventional idea, I envisioned splitting the swim lanes of the scheduler. This unique design showcased the existing schedule above, juxtaposed with its AI-generated counterpart below, offering a revolutionary visualization for each employee. This inventive solution not only addressed our core challenge but also set SmartShifts apart as a trailblazer in the industry, introducing a novel and intuitive interface for streamlined decision-making.
